Last week I suffered the hardest set-back one can imagine. I lost my father very suddenly. He was my rock. He was the one who always gave me advice. He was the one who taught me everything I know about unconditional love. My life revolved around the lessons my dad taught me… I take those lessons he taught me and I share them with my students and clients every day. Now he’s gone and I am finding it hard to get back up again and keep going. Where is my inspiration now that he is gone? Where is my will now? Where is my dad?
Life is not always about moving forward at a steady pace, sometimes it is best to take a step back and prepare for what lies ahead. Think about runners at the starting gate – they always take one step back in preparation which inevitably propels them forward. The steps back ground us, remind us of our limitations and help us to manage our expectations. One step back prepares you for the next two and three steps forward. Your are never lost by stepping back for a moment. If anything, it buys you time to collect yourself and recalibrate your direction. Life is filled with steps back – the key is not to dwell on them and get lost in their reflection. Remember it is only one step back that prepares you for many more steps forward. It is part of life’s process. Set-backs are only temporary and they buy us a bit of rest and contemplation along the way.
Losing my dad was my one step back. After reflection I realize that now it is time to take even greater steps forward. It is my duty to honor the man he was by continuing to share what he has taught me. No more tears, only living the life he taught me so well to live. Remembering this one step back will forever keeping me moving many more steps forward. Thank you, Dad.
